Welcome to Glossop
Nestled on the edge of the Peak District National Park, Glossop is a historic mill town with a rich industrial heritage, stunning scenery, and a strong sense of community.
With its rich industrial heritage, stunning natural surroundings, and welcoming community, Glossop has become a favorite spot for walkers, history enthusiasts, and those seeking a quieter pace of life within easy reach of Manchester.
A Town Steeped in History
Glossop’s origins date back to the Domesday Book, though it truly flourished during the Industrial Revolution, becoming a center for cotton production. The Howard Town Mills and other historic mill buildings still shape the town’s landscape, many now repurposed into apartments, shops, and cafes, blending the old with the new.
Gateway to the Peaks
Glossop is often referred to as the “Gateway to the Dark Peak”, the wilder, more rugged northern part of the Peak District. Its location makes it a popular base for walkers and outdoor enthusiasts. Just outside town, you’ll find scenic routes leading to Kinder Scout, Bleaklow, and Longdendale Valley.
A Vibrant Local Scene
Despite its modest size, Glossop boasts a vibrant cultural and community scene. Independent shops, cosy pubs, and artisan cafes line the high street, while regular markets and events—such as the Glossop Victorian Weekend—bring the town together. The town also supports a growing arts scene, with local galleries, live music, and theatre performances throughout the year.
